some measure of outrage and controversy. nbc's mike taibbi is covering that part of the story for us. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carl. yes, there's been a lot of controversy and it's been building leading up to this day. just think of what's happened in the past couple of weeks leading up to this commemoration of 9/11. in fact no sooner will the last of the names be read and the last of the moments of silence be acknowledged, that two separate protests will form, yes, near ground zero, but more importantly near the site of that proposed culture cal center and mosque. one protesting the mofrk itself, the other group protesting the anti-muslim sentiment. there's been so much of that. hall of fame golfer carol mann saying this is a christian country, muslims should go away, go away soon. and a radio deejay in houston saying that if they build a mosque, i hope somebody blows it up. all that lead to go today. even president obama has been drawn in to this talking with the now abandoned plan to burn those korans by florida pastor terry jones. >> although this may be one

story just up the coast from us here in california. it was dinner time last night, about 6:15 in san bruno, california, the routine of a normal thursday in the neighborhood was shattered by an explosion so loud it was heard for miles. then came the geyser of flames shooting 300 feet in the air and then the noise. people near the blast zone understandably thought it was an earthquake, a nuclear explosion, perhaps a plane had gone down. turned out to be a natural gas line exploding and a fire that wasn't brought under control until just this afternoon. san bruno is a city of about 30,000 people, give or take, just south of san francisco, just west of that city's airport, sfo. federal investigators have converged on the neighborhood where the gas main blew up. we begin our broadcast tonight from the scene. our own kristen welker and miguel almaguer are there for us. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the blast has already been called a state of emergency. this city reeling from an explosion so powerful it claimed lives and forever charred the landscape here. as day brok

virginia and into the carolinas, all associated with what used to be tropical storm the cold. that has dissipated but the moisture is still coming our way. computer models indicate that a lot of rain will fall between now and friday evening. the red and yellow areas indicate four or 5 inches of rain, especially on the eastern shore and the lower eastern shore were heavy rain is possible. there may be some gusty thunderstorms as well. wind advisories have been posted near the bay. tides are expected to run around 2 feet above normal three the day tomorrow. there may be some minor coastal flooding due to the higher than normal ties until the storm can move out. we will check the complete forecast in a few minutes. >> officials around the state are getting ready for this storm. they say they are urging residents to clean off nearby storm drains to help with any flooding. b.g.e. says to get ready now, just in case you lose power. >> the concern we have is the high wind. that could bring down trees, power lines, and obviously with the heavy canopy that we have today, we already have some gr

operations center joins us live on the phone. good morning. mr. any flooding in the city? but we have received reports of localized flooding come around the patapsco avenue. . the road is already close. historically we have instances of flooding there. with the amount of rain we had overnight, that area is already under water. >> when we anticipate heavy rain, there are pockets where you know it is going to flood. to try to get a jump on things? >> yes. we try to utilize transportation and assets so that it frees up fire employees so they cannot respond to major emergencies. the usual suspects are the 83 corridor, jones falls, middle mill up around the mount washington area. and the fells point area. we're not too concerned with the storm surges. given the amount of rain that is falling, and the cells did seem to be all over the place, it is anybody's guess on work the flooding will be the worst. it could be an area where there is not a stream or a tributary at all, where a storm drain becomes clogged. so we're keeping an eye on everything today. >> what can people do to make the situ
